My tastebuds tend to run scared at the prospect of baked snack foods. I have been burned before by dry, bland snacks, so when I looked down at the bags of Michael Season’s Baked cheddar cheese curls and puffs I was already formulating ill thoughts. After all, the bags proclaim 50% and 65% less fat respectively as well as being wheat and gluten free. No hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors. Yikes! Now I was really expecting cardboard.

Shame on me is all I can say because from the first bite these cheesy snacks delighted my pallet. Despite being only 100 calories a bag, the cheddar flavor was pronounced and refined. It was not an artificial, generic can cheese flavor, but a bright, sharp that tasted like it was just cut from the block. Both bags say the snack is made with real cheese and you can taste it.

The flavor was a bit less prominent Michael Season’s Baked Cheddar Cheese Puffs than the curl but as the puff is more airy of a snack this works out. Michael Season’s Baked Cheddar Cheese Curls were as crunchy as their fried brethren, and equally as addictive. The puffs had a nice crunch as well with a light airy finish. Of course you do miss the undeniable taste factor that comes with fat when enjoying these two snacks, but it is much harder to notice than with most baked offerings.

One knock on Michael Season’s is that a lot of snacks claim to be gourmet, and I am not sure even these delicious bits make it quite that far. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed them thoroughly, but to be honest I think it is very hard to find a “gourmet” cheese snack. I was however amazed at the flavor they packed into such healthy treats. I would recommend these to anyone who is trying to drop some weight, but still needs a something to munch on now and again. Michael Season’s Cheddar Curls and Puffs are both definitely worth a munch.
