When I used to pop over to my local deli, I particularly loved Wise’s New York Deli Chips which came in a purple bag. However, I tended to avoid the bright red bag of New York Deli Chips Jalepeno because my tiny taste buds couldn’t handle the spice. Years later I felt like a bit of reminiscing and picked up a bag, the smell was the same pungent one I remember, but would I be able to handle the spice as an adult?

Far ahead of the curve, both the standard and Jalapeno New York Deli Chips are some of the first Kettle Cooked chips I can ever remember eating. I always felt they were head and shoulders above most of the other 50 cent fare because of this fact. The chips have a greasy texture and are very crunchy, like Dirty Chips and other kettle cooked chips we’ve come to know and love today.

When you open the bag you can smell the spice but overall it doesn’t feel “hot”…not at this point anyway. In fact once you take your first bite you sort of take a moment to wonder if these are even hot at all. They are a little salty but not very flavorful, however, about 5 seconds into wondering what the big deal was, the fire started.

One of my co-reviewers mistakingly put several Jalapeno New York Deli Chips in his mouth at once because he didn’t really feel they had much taste, but the decision quickly backfired as his face turned red. Unfortunately, aside from being hot these chips are lacking in any real flavor and aren’t particularly enjoyable to eat by our standards. I was also disappointed to see that the bag seemed much emptier than I remember.

Although it seems an odd thing to do, we decided to give New York Deli Chips Jalepeno flavor a Boring grade because they don’t really have much flavor and although they have a strong kick, it doesn’t merit an average grade. If you like spicy snacks these may be up your alley, but personally I’ll stick to the standard purple bag like I did as a kid.
