Original Smiths Sea Salt and Vinegar hail from “down under” and according to the bag their chips go from farm to pack in 48 hours! What they don’t mention is for a chip that should have a few simple ingredients, it looked like there was a laundry list on the back of this bright pink bag.  CHIPS,

The best Sea Salt and Vinegar Chips we’ve had so far hailed from the UK (See Caffe Nero Chips) so we were hoping that the ex-cons of England could do a respectable job as well (full disclosure this author is part Aussie). Generally, sea salt and vinegar chips give themselves away instantly and doing a blind taste test you can almost always tell what flavor they are from the smell of a freshly opened bag and these were no different.

Original Smiths Sea Salt and Vinegar chips are actually not standard chips, but are made in a “wavy” style which wasn’t indicated to us on the bag and wasn’t necessarily a bad surprise, but it was unexpected in an industry that usually is over-descriptive or features pictures of the snack right on the front. They were a far cry from super crunchy Ruffles Crinkle Cut Chips and even Wavy Lays though.

In terms of taste, they were very salty and vinegary but unfortunately the taste disappeared almost instantly. This is great because it doesn’t leave you puckering, but unfortunately the vinegar wasn’t the only flavor to disappear quickly. The taste of the potato itself went away and the initial crunch also didn’t last particularly long. If you like drinking salt with some vinegar topping that is great, but us potato chip lovers want to feel the potato itself!

In the end these chips were no match for other salt and vinegar chips we’ve tried and were pretty bland after the first bite. They also leave a lot of crumbs so keep some napkins nearby.

The pinnacle of all Sea Salt and Vinegar chips we had hailed from the UK, so could their ex-con ancestors do as good of a job?
