Having not enjoyed  an international snack in quite some time, I was excited to pop open review the can of Chipsletten Paprika Flavor Potato Crisps delivered by a friend. Purchased in Germany, the can was identical to the kind of mini-cans you find Pringles in. The can itself is pretty plain and features pictures of the crisps themselves along with a picture of some Paprika and a Red Pepper. With the same familiar pop as you pull off the freshness seal I dove right in and was very pleased with the results.

Chipsletten Paprika Flavor Potato Crisps were all nice and round and a very limited few were cracked. The chips all had a reddish tinge from the Paprika flavoring and in terms of the crispiness and thickness, they fall almost perfectly between Pringles and Lay’s/Elma Stax. This almost perfect thickness provided the nice quick crunch of a Pringle, with the addition of a stronger potato flavor, no real need to stack here. It also prevents a lot of chip cracking, but this was a mini can so I will need to review a big can to offer a more balanced comparison.

In terms of the flavoring itself, although the Chipsletten Paprika potato chips tasted great, the actual paprika flavoring (which is usually mild in general) was a bit lacking for my taste. At first you get a little bit of paprika tang and then you can taste some salt before the taste dissipates. Perhaps this mild flavor is intentional because it makes you crave more chips and I did end up polishing off the mini can relatively quickly which is a testament to how tasty these chips were!

I was torn on whether or not to give these chips our MUST MUNCH rating, but decided that they fit well into the Highly Recommended category because they are a milder chip. Don’t let this rating sway you at all, however, because both me and a co-tester enjoyed each bite but were looking for a bit more in terms of the flavor. In fact, I am starting to think maybe Paprika should replace salt as the most plain of seasonings because it is a nice, but not overpowering flavor.

These are actually one of four different Chipsletten flavors offered by Lorenz and if you happen to be in Germany and other areas of Europe where these are offered I would say it is definitely worth trying a canister, especially if you are a Pringles fan. They provide a great crunch and their well balanced paprika taste indicates to me that their other flavors should be delicious as well. I guess we should have assumed that Germans would enjoy some tasty chips with their world-class beer selection and these chips proved it.
