We enjoyed Utz Natural Gourmet chips the first time around and were intrigued by the bag of Utz Natural Gourmet Medley, a cheaper man’s Terra Chip mix if you will, when we picked it up at the store. The bag includes Dark Russet, Blue, Lightly Salted and Sweet potatoes for a colorful combination. However, as much as we love good looking chips here at Munchies Blog we really love chips that taste great! So did this medley wow us, or did a single flavor hog the spotlight?

We already learned the hard way that good looking chips can sometimes be quite bland (we’re looking at you Veggie Crisps). Although the bag says it has four types of potato, the lightly salted and dark russet were hard to differentiate, and the latter felt like free stuff added to a cereal box, nice on the package but you really have to dig for it and once you realize its a pog or a sticker, the excitement fades.

The bag of Utz Natural Gourmet Medley chips had a nice smell, most likely due to the Sweet Potato chips. Also, fear not, like their original cousins, these chips have 16% of your Vitamin C and 30% of your Vitamin A needs so I guess we could call them “healthy.” They also are free of gluten and are cooked in sunflower oil with no artificial colors.

As far as the chips themselves, we felt that there wasn’t much differentiation between the flavors although each looked remarkably different. The sweet potato chips were very thin and greasy, but didn’t taste like sweet potato. The Russet took a while for the flavor to hit, and were also quite greasy. The best of the bunch was definitely the Blue Potato which had a mild, consistent taste, but really had their own flavor when compared to the rest of the bag.

Overall, Utz Natural Gourmet Medley Kettle Cooked chips were definitely tasty, but didn’t blow us away. They are similar to the standard Kettle Cooked flavor, which isn’t a bad thing, but it is the reason they remain in the average category. If you like Kettle Cooked chips and are looking for a safe bet to spice things up (especially if you are having guests and want to offer something a bit more visually interesting), you’ve found your winner here.
