Munchies From My Past – Handi Snacks

Written by:

A new feature we are adding here on Munchies Blog is MFMP, a section where we will reminisce about snacks from our childhood. These can be snacks which are still available, but the focus is on the child inside each of us longing for a special treat. I begin with Handi Snacks, a simple munchable which comprised of some crackers, some preservative filled “cheez” and a red stick.

Handi Snacks are probably one of the healthier snacks that I miss, although I don’t think salt covered crackers with packaged soft cheez is necessarily healthy. I also think that i probably ruined some baby teeth chewing on that red stick after I was done, although probably less than from eating the sugar stick after a bag of fun dip :). Handi Snacks are in fact available today and actually come with Ritz crackers (sidenote, try Ritz in the micro for 10 seconds with some Mozzarella if you want a tasty treat), which probably doesn’t change much from the salty crackers I remember as a kid.

What I remember most about eating a Handi Snacks was trying to use as much cheese as possible on each cracker and still have enough for a few cracker free globs of cheese at the end. Which sounds pretty gross, albeit delicious now that I think of it.  Handi Snacks also later added a version that came with  breadsticks, although I think the red stick is necessary. The other plus of Handi Snacks was that it allowed products like another MFMP, Dunkaroos.

To Nabisco, thank you for this delicious snack, it may not be an established classic, but I will fondly remember it always.

Remember this snack? Love it or hate it? Let us know in the comments. If you have a MFMP you want to share, send us an email at  or use our contact page.

Thanks to savouringgrace at flickr for the absolutely perfect picture

The crackers were always too small for the gobs. My hands would get sticky, and not the good sticky where you can lick them off, the bad sticky where it would get on your pants.

Delighted to have my picture used for such a noble purpose! 😀 The one in the picture came from a big pack I bought at Costco and they are identical to what I had as a kid except that the cheez is creamier instead of being more pasty like it used to be. Kinda miss that but it still tastes the same. For me, the crackers were always an afterthought, so I had the opposite strategy as you. If I ate them, I would spread the thinnest amount of cheez on to make sure I had enough to eat straight on the stick.

So you were that kid at school eating the Handi Snacks at lunch… Nice Dunkaroos reference, by the way. A favorite MFMP are the fun size variety packs of doritos, cheetos, fritos, etc. Every day at elementary school, lunch was a pleasant surprise in which I got a go-to classic chip. I couldn’t lose.

Did your fam get you the multi pack mini ones for surprise or literally just buy a bunch and give you. I always looked forward to fritos…
